Todd used to be a thriving lumber community in the latter half of the 19th century. By the 1890s, Todd was larger than the nearby town of Boone in Watauga County. The timber company began losing money in the delivery process because most of the mountains in the valley were stripped of all trees and they had to travel long distances to deliver. The business went under and many residents left the town. Today, you won’t find the remains of these businesses because a flood washed it all away. Instead, you’ll see a vacation spot for out-of-town visitors and a secluded residential area.
